What the next investment should prove
Connect the next technical commitment to evidence, a budget and a decision that becomes possible afterwards.
Early-stage plans contain uncertainty. The useful question is what a particular investment allows the company to learn or accomplish, and what becomes possible as a result.
A technical milestone could show that a critical integration works, that a workflow meets an agreed quality threshold, or that an initial customer can receive the service at a plausible cost. A commercial milestone needs commercial evidence: a successful benchmark does not establish willingness to pay.
Make the next commitment specific
For a defined stage, connect four things:
- The business decision that needs to be made.
- The assumption or capability the work will address.
- The time, people and money required.
- The evidence that would support continuing, changing direction or stopping.
YC's seed-fundraising guidance connects the amount raised with a credible plan and the progress it can purchase. That is a useful discipline for technical planning as well. Y Combinator.
Preserve the larger opportunity
Imagine an illustrative founder planning a broad AI product. The whole product may eventually be necessary for the vision. The next decision may depend on a much narrower question: whether one important task can be completed reliably on the data available.
A focused evaluation can inform that decision before the team commits to every surrounding feature. In a different situation, customer access or integration work may be the prerequisite; the smallest informative step depends on the actual constraint.
Early commitments can also rationally favour speed, market access or a larger opportunity over immediate profitability. The assumptions and funding needs should remain explicit.
I help connect the technical scope to this decision, estimate the effort and identify dependencies. Customer demand and the investment decision require their own judgement and evidence. A clear plan supports those conversations without promising a funding outcome.

If this maps to a decision you are weighing, describe it and I will propose a focused scope.
